My North American Diaries: Vermont - exploring '"The Green Mountain State"
Hey, it's Libby!
This summer has been a mixture of real ups and downs for me - every plan I had before the summer started went completely out of the window and I have ended up living spontaneously for the last 4 months or so. There was one thing, however, that was set in stone...my 2 week North American road trip with my wonderful family!
I want to write about all the places we visited over the 2 week period, however, as each place is so different, I thought I would post them in a series of blog posts that focuses on just one place at a time: 'My North American Diaries'. Keep an eye out for a few more of these in the future!
This is my first 'My North American Diaries' post and so I saw fitting to write about the place we visited first. So, without further ado, I introduce to you beautiful Vermont!
Vermont, USA:
Notorious for it's skiing and mountainous landscape, the American state of Vermont provided the perfect mixture of tranquility and adventure - the perfect start to any road trip!
We stayed in a quaint, little cabin on the outskirts of a small, 'off the radar town' called Jamaica (if you're interested, here's the link to 'Apple Blossom Cottage' via Airbnb!) We were only there for 2 nights meaning we only had one full day to explore all that Vermont had to offer. We decided that there was no better way to really get a feel for the place than to go on a hike!
The state is littered with country parks and walking routes, however the route we opted to take was local to where we were staying right in Jamaica. Our destination? Hamilton Falls.
Here are a few of the photos we captured en route:

The walk from the park entrance to the falls was about 3 miles, so a 6 mile round trip - a nice amount for a day out! We used the foot of the falls as an idyllic spot to have our picnic.
The trails are such a lovely way to see the 'real' Vermont - the paths take you through some stunning landscapes that are just not always accessible by road. If you're fancying a scenic, relaxed and peaceful getaway, Vermont during the summer months is definitely worth a visit!
If you have a few more days to explore or want a bit more adventure, here is a list of a few more things you could do to make the most of your time in Vermont:
- A lot of the ski resorts/mountains open up their cable cars so you can venture to the top of the mountains and really appreciate the landscape. Unfortunately for us it was quite overcast after the hike and the fog was hanging low. Get a good day of sunshine though and this is a must!
- Vermont has a lot of rivers and natural rapids, so water sports such as kayaking, canoeing and even surfing (yes!) are popular among tourists
- Camp! Nothing sounds nicer than lighting a campfire at night and roasting marshmallows, mmmm...
- Yoga. Up a mountain - Not sure where I heard this from but I know this is definitely a thing.
To finish, here are a few of my favourite things about 'The Green Mountain State':
- Vermont is an incredibly free state: They were the first American state to allow civil unions legislatively and it's illegal to not recycle certain things!
- They are home to the ORIGINAL Ben & Jerry's factory... we went and it was incredible; they even have an 'ice-cream graveyard' for all the flavours that never made it past testing, or those that have been discontinued.
- The real sense of relaxation and peace; I swear as soon as we crossed that borderline all of my stresses went away! (probably why mountain yoga is a thing)
